CopperGate backs G.hn standard

Chipset provider CopperGate Communications has given its full support to G.hn as the network standard for next generation home entertainment.

G.hn was approved as the global standard for home networking by the International Telecommunication Union (ITU) last week in Switzerland.

It is the first global standard to support communication through all three wire types that already exist in consumer households: phone lines, coax cables, and AC power cables.

As such, it will deliver next generation networking over existing household wiring.

In addition, G.hn offers up to 20 times faster download speeds compared to existing wireless technologies, and up to three times faster download speeds compared to existing wired solutions.

“G.hn is going to be a life-changing technology,” said Malcolm Johnson, director of ITU’s Telecommunication Standardization Bureau.

“With G.hn, every wire in every home around the world can become a home entertainment network.

“This will enable seamless communication between computers, HDTVs, and telephones over existing wires.

“This exciting new technology will also foster tremendous innovations such as energy efficient smart appliances, home automation, and telemedicine devices.”

CopperGate, which has long been researching the potential of networking over coax and power cables, has expressed its full support for G.hn.

“CopperGate is 100 percent committed to G.hn,” said Gabi Hilevitz, CEO of CopperGate Communications.

Hilevitz added that Coppergate aims to become a global leader in G.hn chipset provision.
