Huge Indonesian Mall gets total Wi-Fi solution.

August 13, 2016

One of the world’s most modern and innovative shopping malls is located in the Indonesian capital Jakarta.

The “Lifestyle Mall” is not just a mall, it is a mall complex that also incorporates fX Lifestyle X’nter, which is specifically aimed at the city’s young elite business crowd in the 25-45 age bracket.

This part of the complex focuses on leisure, with all kinds of entertainment facilities such as multiplex cinemas.

The fX has been open since 1990 but has recently decided to offer its visitors a new service specifically aimed at its younger clients, by installing more than 200 Firetide wireless access points spread throughout the massive building.

Indonesian service provider, iFORTE, has installed the system to offer Wi-Fi almost anywhere in the mall, that also includes shops, restaurants, meeting rooms, offices, and apartments spread over three separate building units.

In an unusual move they have even implemented Firetide mesh nodes for use in the building’s multiple elevators, thus avoiding disconnection that usually happens when taking the elevator.

The mall network is part of a much larger project being undertaken by iFORTE and Firetide that aims to give the city’s metropolitan areas a continuous network that will make use of fibre-optic, mesh and Wi-Fi.

So far around 150 miles of fibre have been laid under the city’s main streets.

The system is capable of carrying VoIP and IPTV in addition to all the regular internet conveniences.

Speeds are said to be up to 5 Mbps for the monthly paid version which is available to business and domestic residents of the mall and visitors can make use of a daily subscription.

The installation of the WLAN network is nearly complete with 218 indoor and five outdoor Firetide HotPoint access points, 80 of those servicing the actual shopping centre.

The rest of the access points are distributed within the residence and office buildings, with six to 10 per floor.

Twenty-two Firetide HotPort mesh nodes were used throughout the facility to extend the wireless network to outdoor areas and places difficult to reach with fibre, such as elevators.

Future plans for the fX Lifestyle X’nter network include adding wireless video surveillance cameras to help manage and redirect automobile traffic.

Long term plans are to offer IPTV and VoIP via Wi-Fi.

Similar to Internet access, IPTV and VoIP services are already offered via the fiber network, and the wireless network will be built out to support these additional services.
