Skype mobile to launch in Taiwan

April 1, 2016

Skype voice calls from a mobile phone, currently available in the UK on the Hutchison 3G network, are to be made available to consumers in Taiwan. The Skype operating agent in Taiwan, Robert Lo, made the announcement, and said that specially designed Skype handsets will be available on one or two of Taiwan’s 3G networks.

The service allows users to make Skype calls from their mobile phone handset to other Skype handsets, or to any PC with Skype installed. The deal between 3 UK and Skype costs users £10 per month, which allows them to make unlimited Skype calls. The service is Taiwan is expected to cost less than £10 per month.

Skype has not made contact with any of Taiwan’s top three 3G service providers – Taiwan Mobile, Far EasTone Telecommunications, and Chunghwa Telecom – and so it is expected that one of the two smaller networks, Asia Pacific Telecom or Vibo Telecom, will offer the service.

Skype currently has 300,000 chargeable members in Taiwan, and 2,700 business users.
