Top Technology Firm Throws Support Behind Picocells

One of the top leaders in the cellular-over-IP industry is throwing its support behind picocells, rather than femtocell grids, for propelling next-generation 3G technology.

In a just-released white paper, picocell pioneer ip.access told mobile network operators that 3G picocells (also known as “super femtocells”) are the best choice for growing businesses.

Ip.access conceded that femtocells will often work well enough for the home office and small-office markets, but said that because bigger businesses require an easier user experience and are more conscious of operational and cost management, picocells represent the way for the future.

In the world of cellular communications, picocells and femtocells represent two different approaches for extending wireless connectivity to places where the signal might otherwise be hindered, such as in office buildings.

According to Dr. Andy Tiller, who serves as Vice-President of Marketing for ip.access, reliability and cost are the primary factors that favor picocells over femtocells.

When a business starts growing larger, according to Tiller, configurations tend to get more elaborate, and picocells can handle the higher-level configuration better.

As a result, femtocell base stations, which aren’t really designed for larger companies, have more problems that pop up, and their reliability suffers.

Of late, ip.access has focused much of its attention on picocells as they saw the trends emerging in their favor, and their commitment to the technology has been rewarded.

Just days ago, ABI Research, a technology-analysis firm, named the Cambridge-based communications technology firm the top picocell vendor.

Ip.access has long boasted that its flagship service, nanoGSM, is tops in the field, and now this independent research seems to back up the claim. (read that story here)
