NTT DoCoMo demos 250mbps Super 3G connection

March 28, 2016

Phone service provider, NTT DoCoMo of Japan, has successfully demonstrated download speeds of 250Mbps with ‘Super 3G’ cellular technology.

The trial, which builds on NTT DoCoMo’s demonstration of 100Mbps mobile downloads in November, last year, was carried out in an actual wireless environment near the company’s R&D labs in Yokosuka, near Tokyo.

250Mbps is at least 12 times faster than the current ADSL2+ speeds available in the UK, and around 100 times faster than the wireless broadband services currently available.

The technology is part of the Long Term Evolution process of the 3GPP (3rd Generation Partnership Project) which controls the 3G cellular systems.

Super 3G, a version of High-Speed Downlink Packet Access (HSDPA) and High-Speed Uplink Packet Access (HSUPA) technologies, uses four Multiple-Input Multiple-Output (MIMO) antennas for both the base station (transmission side) and mobile station (receiving side).

The technology operates in the 20MHz bandwidth, and will be rolled out to NTT DoCoMo’s customers in 2017.
