London public sector broadband network launched

September 28, 2015

A broadband network connecting public services across London has been officially launched.

The London Public Services Network provides a secure way for public bodies, such as local authorities, central government and the NHS, to share data.

The network will allow public-sector organisations to efficiently share information across organisational boundaries.

London councils will also benefit from cost savings through shared services and the network should encourage collaboration between boroughs, the NHS and central government.

Councils are charged an initial connection fee of £20,173 for the network, and then pay £6,600 a year for maintenance and management fees. Around 27 of 33 London councils have signed up to the network so far.

The London Public Services Network utilises the existing London Grid for Learning, whose cabling currently connects the majority of London boroughs.
